Visual Display System
The visual system provides the pilots with a computer generated view on the outside world. It has a wide field of view and projects the image at infinity to match visual conditions in the real aircraft.
Integrated with the flight-deck structure, the lightweight outside world display system provides a collimated 180-degree horizontal by 40-degree vertical field of view. Three DLP projectors, above the shuttle, project high-resolution computer-generated images onto the rear projection screen.
The generated images are visible for all occupants on the flight-deck as they are projected from the rear projection screen onto the collimation mirror. A newly designed light-weight space frame, consisting of carbon fiber reinforced epoxy tubes connects the mirror to the shuttle.
